Pub Grease Trap Requirements

For grease trap samples, you must test for oil and grease concentration (excluding hydrocarbons) using methods specified by the American Public Health Association (i.e., APHA 5520) or equivalent. It is your responsibility to ensure that your grease trap is cleaned regularly and appropriately. The recommended steps for cleaning grease traps are as follows: Different food establishments have different oil and grease loads in their feed water and therefore the frequency with which they should clean their grease traps would vary. There are two types of grease traps that are commonly available: a) standard circular grease traps, which are usually built underground; and (b) portable grease traps, which are normally installed above ground. T3. Can I install a portable grease trap instead of designing a standard grease trap? In addition, a portable grease trap must include a mechanical oil separator to automatically remove floating grease and oil from the separator. For more information, see the Code of Conduct for Remediation and Remediation Works. Q5. Why should I regularly maintain my private grease and sewer trap? The grease trap must be installed in an accessible area where workers can clean without causing nuisance, health hazards and hygiene problems during operation and maintenance. Have a cleaning/maintenance plan You should only hire knowledgeable people to clean your private sewage system and grease trap. The interval to perform maintenance depends on many factors, such as the load on your grease trap.

As an indication, you can consider cleaning your grease trap every two weeks by renting an approved general trash can (class C). It`s not uncommon to plan or operate a brewery and be told by your regulator that pre-treatment is necessary. Restaurant wastewater typically requires only one grease trap, but brewery wastewater can be classified as industrial wastewater. You`ll likely need to adjust the pH of your wastewater to meet discharge requirements, and you may want a flow meter to measure volume. See me for putting this system in place the first time. To prevent your grease trap from being clogged with food solids, which would lead to possible violations of FOG regulations, you should install the drain sieve so that you do not have problems pumping the grease traps. You can hire an accredited laboratory to regularly take and analyze water samples from your grease trap. A list of accredited laboratories in Singapore is available on the Singapore Accreditation Council (SAC) website under www.sac-accreditation.gov.sg. Keep analytical reports for verification by CEPA officials. The commercial wastewater sample taken for analysis must be representative of the quality of the consumed water to be discharged into the sewer system after pre-treatment in the grease trap.

Sampling may be carried out at the exit of the grease trap, which is normally located in the control chamber immediately after the grease trap, or from the inner annular chamber of the grease trap. What criteria are used to determine the size of standard grease traps? Q8. How do I determine how often my grease trap is cleaned? STEP 1: You need to verify that your contractor is performing the cleaning task in accordance with PUB`s recommended grease trap cleaning steps. STEP 2: If you are already cleaning your grease trap every two weeks according to the grease trap cleaning steps recommended by PUB and you still cannot meet the runoff limits, Your grease trap may not be enough to supply the amount of water used by your restaurant. (a) Grease traps should be sized according to the quantity of feed water to be treated and designed to allow maximum oil-water separation efficiency, taking into account factors such as the temperature and speed of consumption of the water entering the grease trap. b) You may want to consider installing more grease traps on your premises to cope with an increase in the volume of feed water to be treated. You can consult with qualified people such as licensed engineers, plumbers or grease trap suppliers to help you with your consideration.

c) You can submit your application online on the PUB website if you wish to install additional grease traps on your premises. For more information on installing your grease trap, see the PUB Code of Conduct for Sewerage and Sanitation here. A grease trap is a separator, stopper, tank or pit above or below the ground that allows cooling and separation of grease from wastewater. Grease, oil and grease released from food establishments are the main causes of clogging in public sewers. Without a properly sized and maintained grease trap, grease enters the sewer system and accumulates. This leads to overlays that impede the regular flow of wastewater down the sewer and cause it to overflow into your premises or other public spaces.
